What Is Photobiomodulation?

Photobiomodulation is a light-based therapy that applies selected wavelengths to targeted tissue. The light may influence cellular activity and support the body's normal repair response. Clinicians may use photobiomodulation as part of care for pain, inflammation, or soft-tissue concerns. The method is also called low-level light therapy.

Key Takeaways About Photobiomodulation

  • Photobiomodulation uses light, not manual pressure.
  • Treatment settings depend on the target area and care plan.
  • Photobiomodulation is not the same as diagnostic imaging.

How Photobiomodulation Works

Photobiomodulation directs therapeutic light toward a selected area of the body. Light energy interacts with cells in the treatment area and may support normal cellular activity. The practical goal is to influence the local tissue response without applying mechanical force.

A clinician selects the treatment area and settings according to the care plan. The approach is commonly described as low-level light therapy, although the treatment device and clinical protocol can vary. Photobiomodulation does not create an image of the body, so it differs from diagnostic imaging. A session may be included alongside hands-on care when the treatment plan addresses both tissue function and movement.

From the Arrowhead Clinic Chiropractor Atlanta team

When we include Photobiomodulation in a care plan, we identify the target area and review the person’s current concerns. We then select the treatment approach that fits the broader plan. Our team tracks changes in symptoms, movement, and tolerance across visits.

Photobiomodulation in Practice: A Real-World Example

A person with localized muscle soreness after physical activity may receive Photobiomodulation as part of a Laser Therapy visit. The clinician directs the light toward the affected area and coordinates the session with the rest of the care plan.
