What Is Inflammation?

Inflammation is the body’s protective response to tissue irritation, injury, or infection. It changes blood flow and immune activity near the affected area, which may produce swelling, warmth, redness, or tenderness. In sports injuries, inflammation can occur around muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, or other tissues after physical stress.

  • Inflammation is not the same as infection.

How Inflammation Works

Inflammation begins when damaged or irritated tissue signals for a local protective response. Blood vessels change activity in the area, and immune cells help manage the affected tissue. These changes may create swelling, warmth, redness, or tenderness. The response can be short term after an injury, or it can continue when irritation remains.

In sports injury care, clinicians consider the location, movement pattern, tenderness, and tissue involved. A strained muscle may produce a different pattern from an irritated tendon or joint. Swelling can provide a visible clue, but inflammation may also occur without obvious surface changes. Inflammation describes a process, while pain describes a sensory experience that may accompany it.

From the Arrowhead Clinic Chiropractor Atlanta team

When we assess inflammation, we consider the injury history, affected area, movement, tenderness, and changes in function. We use that information to guide the sports injury examination and distinguish local tissue irritation from patterns that may involve nerves or joints. Our team records relevant findings before choosing care.

Inflammation in Practice: A Real-World Example

A runner develops tenderness around the knee after increasing training demands. During sports injury treatment, the clinician checks movement and nearby tissues to identify signs consistent with inflammation and to guide the examination.
