What Are Orthotics?

Orthotics is a support device placed inside or beneath footwear to guide foot position, distribute pressure, and improve movement during standing or walking. Orthotics may be prefabricated or custom fitted. A clinician selects or adjusts orthotics based on foot structure, symptoms, walking patterns, and the goals of foot pain treatment.

How Orthotics Works

Orthotics work by changing how the foot meets the ground inside a shoe. The device may support an arch, guide heel position, or spread pressure across the foot. These changes can affect movement through the ankle, knee, and hip during walking.

A clinician considers foot shape, joint motion, walking mechanics, footwear, and reported symptoms when choosing an orthotic approach. Gait analysis can show how the foot moves during steps, while a hands-on exam can identify areas of tenderness or restricted motion. A proper fit also depends on the shoe because available space and shoe structure affect how the device sits.

From the Arrowhead Clinic Chiropractor Atlanta team

When we assess orthotics for Foot Pain Treatment, we review foot position, joint motion, walking mechanics, and footwear together. We check whether the device supports the treatment goal without creating new pressure points. Our team also considers how the orthotic fits the patient’s daily shoes and activities.

Orthotics in Practice: A Real-World Example

A person with foot pain during prolonged standing may receive an orthotic that supports the arch and redistributes pressure inside the shoe. The clinician then checks foot motion and shoe fit to decide whether adjustments are needed.
