What Is the Sciatic Nerve?

The sciatic nerve is the body’s largest peripheral nerve, formed from nerve roots in the lower spine and extending through the buttock into each leg. It carries movement signals to several leg muscles and sensory signals from parts of the leg and foot. Irritation or pressure along this pathway can produce sciatica symptoms.

Key Takeaways About Sciatic Nerve

  • The sciatic nerve follows one pathway from the lower back into the leg.
  • Symptoms depend on which part of the nerve pathway becomes irritated.
  • Sciatic nerve pain is not the same as every type of low back pain.

How Sciatic Nerve Works

Sciatic nerve function depends on signals traveling between the lower spine, buttock, leg, and foot. The nerve forms from several lower spinal nerve roots before passing through the pelvis and buttock. Branches continue toward the lower leg, where they support muscle control and sensation.

Nerve root compression can affect this pathway near the spine, while irritation farther along the route can affect nearby tissues. A clinical assessment considers the pain pattern, areas of altered sensation, muscle performance, and movement response. These findings help distinguish sciatic nerve involvement from referred pain that does not follow the same nerve pathway.

From the Arrowhead Clinic Chiropractor Atlanta team

When we assess sciatic nerve concerns, we review the symptom pattern, spinal movement, sensation, and muscle function. We also consider whether findings suggest involvement near the lumbar spine or farther along the nerve pathway. Our team uses this information to guide care within sciatica treatment.

Sciatic Nerve in Practice: A Real-World Example

A person with low back discomfort may also feel burning or tingling that travels through the buttock and down the leg. During sciatica treatment, the care team may compare spinal movement with strength, sensation, and the pattern of symptoms.
